At two months old, TamTam was already hospitalized due to UTI. Last Wednesday, he was too cranky, wanted to be carried all the time and was crying out really hard every time I put him down. It was that afternoon that he had developed a fever, 38.5C. I immediately called Alvin because I really didn’t know what to do… I called his pedia’s clinic but it was already closed so I had to look for another doctor. I called SBCC (his pedia used to work here and it is just across my OB’s clinic) and they have an available pedia. So I booked an appointment immediately.
In the clinic; they checked his weight, length and temperature. Since he had a fever, the staff collected urine sample to rule out UTI since TamTam had no cough nor colds. When the doctor checked, everything seemed fine so we had to wait for the urine test. The test showed positive for UTI and they collected another urine sample for urine culture. We were also advised that TamTam needed to be admitted in the hospital since the antibiotic would be through IV. At that time, no single room was available in Gleneagles Hospital… we were asked to choose between Mt. Alveria and Thomson. We chose Thomson over Mt. Alveria since it’s known as a mother and baby hospital. But still, I prefer Gleneagles services (another story).
Upon admission, we were given the Single Deluxe Room at the price of a single room since no single room was available but we were advised that we would be transferred if ever a single room becomes available. Their room is bigger compared to Gleneagles, even the single room. There is also a refrigerator in both room types while Gleneagles doesn’t have any… Their food also tastes better (normal diet) and I took confinement food since I am breastfeeding the little boy. For three days, I ate nutritious foods plus snack in the morning and evening!
It was already past 8AM when they did an IV needle insertion and at the same time, collected blood sample in the treatment room and we were not allowed to enter. My gosh, my little boy was crying his heart out and it really broke my heart… And then an antibiotic was administered to him for one hour. After that, the nurse applied an oral gel for the little boy’s thrush as advised by his pedia. He again cried but he still managed to continue sleeping… After an hour, he woke up and asked for milk… but he spat out lots of milk! Again, I got scared and just carried my little boy while I put him to sleep but he was still crying. They also checked TamTam’s temperature and he had fever again! Another dose of paracetamol was given to him and after a few minutes, he was able to sleep on my chest for the rest of the night. His temperature was being monitored every two hours and since then he had no fever…
On our second day, he was a little bit okay… he could smile and started to be playful and cheerful again. He had kidney and head ultrasound. The head ultrasound is another thing… not related to his fever. It’s just that his doctor was a bit alarmed because the little boy’s head always clings to the right side. Partly, it’s my fault. I am always on his right side since I have difficulty nursing him on the other side. Thank God, both tests are normal. He spent his whole second day sleeping beside me… I did not put him in the wooden cot provided since he moves a lot while sleeping. Hay, I was the one who was not able to sleep since he occupied almost three fourths of our bed. Anyways, as long as he’s fine I am ok. I even asked Dadh not to sleep in the hospital with us since the little boy was already fine and he had work the following day…
On the next day, the little boy was back to his old self… so alert and active. I was also surprised seeing him smile at other people. He is such a darling! His doctor also noticed that the little boy’s mood improved a lot. So after the urine culture and blood test results were released, we were advised to go home… but then, we had to continue giving him oral antibiotics.
Thank God, TamTam is fine now but still, we are praying that there won’t be another episode of UTI and that the kidneys test that needed to be done on his sixth month will be normal.
With this incident, Alvin and I are really considering getting a medical insurance which includes disability insurance for me and for TamTam since Alvin already have one provided by his company. Honestly, this hospitalization cost us a lot… can be compared to giving birth in Singapore via normal delivery. Yup, that much. Well, we are not complaining… the little boy’s condition is still our top priority. Hoping that everything will be fine even if it costs us a lot.
